In addition to the beautiful silver work on the pin, there is a beautiful elongated turquoise and a lovely oval opal. The pendant was made by renowned Navajo artist David Umpleby and is signed "sterling", "DEU" and "Made in Santa Fe" on the all sterling back.
Umpleby is well known for his beautiful silver work and use of very fine turquoise & gemstones. This DEU bug pin & pendant is very large, unusual and beautiful. The turquoise that Umpleby selected for the body of the bug in this pendant is simply fabulous! The turquoise is a large, elongated oval stone (2 1/2" long x 3/4" wide). The stone is a beautiful turquoise color with brown matrix. The opal Umpleby selected for the head of the bug is dark with bits of firey green & blue with brown that matches the color of the matrix. The turquoise is genuine but the opal could be man made. Both are very beautiful stones.
The stones have nice thickness and are deep in the setting. The bale and the clasp for the pin are nicely placed on the back of the pin. The silver work on the bug's head, legs and bale on the back is lovely. This is my finest DEU piece from many years of collecting Umpleby's Navajo art. This piece is so versatile and unique. I have enjoyed wearing it as both a pin & pendant as a signature piece. It is a very significant piece and quite eye-catching.The bug pendant looks great worn on either silver or turquoise necklaces. The bug pin & pendant is in excellent pre-owned condition. There are minor surface scratches on the pendant as expected from normal wear.
No repairs and no damage. The stones are secure in the setting. The clasp holds the pin securely.
The pendant is marked "sterling" on the back and tested as 95% sterling on a GXL Next electronic tester. Width at widest point side to side: 2 3/4. Total thickness of pin: 5/8. Opening in bale: 1/4 x 1/4. Size of turquoise: 2 1/2" long x 3/4" wide.
Size of opal: 10/16" x 1/2". Marked: DEU, Made in Sante Fe and Sterling. This signature bug pendant & pin is a wonderful and creative work of art by a famous Navajo artisan. DEU jewelry is highly collectible and quite difficult to find.
This opal & turquoise pendant & pin is the most beautiful and unusual DEU piece I have ever seen in years of searching for his works of art.
