In the world of Native jewelry Hopi silversmiths are not as prolific as other tribes, therefore, you just won't see as much of it for sale. The Hopi are known for their silver overlay work and this approximately 1 5/8 diameter pin is an example of that. Overlay is where the bottom sheet of silver is oxidized or blackened. The top sheet has patterns or designs cut out.
The oxidized bottom makes the top layer of cut out silver stand out in a very nice way and gives the jewelry a more dimensional look. Stamped sterling and hallmarked with a bear. Would opine the hallmark is that of Lawrence Saufkie.
For more information on Mr. Condition: There is a fine patina is several areas and fine surface scratches seen on 10x magnification as expected for a vintage piece. The pin back is a tiny bit sticky but works well. There is also a tiny bit of loss of oxidation on the rim of the open area which can be seen in the pictures. Thank you for your interest.
