When I was growing on the Navajo Reservation, my grandmother used to tell me stories about the horses and how we would use them in the traditional ways.
The morning star are the eyes which allows the horse to see in the night (night sky and mountains on the neck); the bridle represents the rainbow and down by the chest there is a Yei'bi'chai's face which is a grandparent's spirit. The Navajo believe that Yei'ii' controls the morning and shows with his spirits to give gifts. On the right leg is a Long-haired Kachina who is a Hopi war chief. On the side is cornfield and a spider web; the corn is used in traditional ceremonies and the web is a symbol of nature's achieved balance. The chief's headdress is the symbol of the dancing of the storm and lightning. The tail represents an eagle feather. Handmade Native American silver pin was handmade using the overlay technique.
Navajo silversmith Sam Gray uses heavy gauge sterling silver so the designs are prominent and the reliefs are deep. The designs are hand-cut using a jeweler's saw. The remaining sheet of silver, or negative design, is then soldered to the bottom sheet.
The Medicine Horse pendant is then hand-stamped, the background is textured and oxidized and the silver is polished to a high shine. Oxidation is burned onto the silver and will not chip, fade, or peel. Sam Gray was born in 1964.
His father was from the Zuni Pueblo and his mother was Navajo. He is known for his use of heavy gauge sterling silver and quality stones. When Sam is not making museum-quality Native American jewelry, he spends time on his ranch near the Zuni Pueblo in New Mexico tending to his cattle and riding horses.
