Ever the sought after artist, Dan Simplicio created a recognizable style of natural turquoise set in silver with branch coral. This pin is a particularly fine example of Dan Simplicio's work with its long tube of red branch coral with subtle pale/whitish streaks that extends the length of the pin and deep blue-green turquoise stones. Expert silverwork completes the pin. It measures 2 1/4" long x 2" width. Unsigned (as is characteristic of Dan Simplicio's work from this period) - but unmistakably Dan Simplico. I have had two separate Native American jewelry experts tell me this is indeed Dan Simplicio's work (names available upon request). Background: This IMPORTANT vintage Native American hand made turquoise, coral, and Sterling silver pin was created by famed Zuni Pueblo artist, Dan Simplicio, and helps to cement his reputation as one of the greatest Zuni artists of all time. Simplicio, who is credited as the first Native American artist to set branch coral in jewelry, includes a large piece of red coral flanked by two blue turquoise stones, and stylized leaves of silver. Stamped silver drops and wires are attached to a hand cut silver backing. Dan Simplicio 1917 - 1969; Zuni. One of the most innovative and wide-ranging Zuni artists, Simplicio was the first to develop styles and materials usage that have since become commonplace.

He collaborated with a number of the most widely recognized masters of Zuni art, including Leekya Deyuse, Teddie Weahkee, Leo Poblano, Bernard Homer, and Lee Edaakie. Early in his career, Simplicio worked at C. Wallace's Zuni trading post, grinding and setting stones.

Wallace collected his work; and, when his collection was auctioned at Sotheby's in 1975, it included more than 50 pieces by Simplicio. Simplicio's jewelry has a highly individual look, resulting from its distinctive use of deep red branch coral with intense blue turquoise. Silver leaf work and stamped drops add texture and detail, creating a delicate counterpoint to the heavier turquoise and branch coral.
