Vintage Native American Navajo Sterling Thunderbird Eagle Turquoise Pin AJC
The pin was handcrafted by Albert Cleveland and his wife, Jeanette. The Clevelands are known for their traditional Navajo jewelry made with old tools from their family. The design of the pin is the traditional pose of the Navajo thunderbird.
The wings of the thunderbird are spread out on each side, the tailfeathers are pointing downward and the head looks to the right. The depth of the turquoise is nicely displayed in the setting. There are beautiful hand stampings on the pin and a wonderful dark patina that only comes with age. Jewelry by the Clevelands is highly prized by collectors. The clasp on the back of the pin is in good working condition and holds securely.There are no chips or cracks in the turquoise (which is genuine). The stone is secure in the setting. There are a few light surface scratches on the pin as expected in pre-owned jewelry. The pin is in excellent pre-owned condition.
The pin/pendant is marked "AJC" and "sterling" on the back. The dark patina could be polished for a brighter look. The last photo shows several Navajo pins & pendants that I currrently have listed. The thunderbird is a supernatural spirit in many Native American cultures. The symbolism can vary from Tribe to Tribe but the thunderbird is generally a symbol of strength & power. Width (side to side): 2 1/4. Length (top to bottom): 2 1/8. Approx size of turquoise: 5/8" x 6/8". The thunderbird brooch is a very traditional Navajo design with beautiful silver work and an exquisite blue turquoise. This vintage Cleveland pin would be a great addition to any Native American jewelry collection.
