This is a listing for a vintage near antique Zuni pin, circa 1940s. It's actually a pin and pendant combination, which is nice. It was hand crafted during the C. Wallace era and as fine as anything represented by that collection. It's interesting in that the pin has such a dark aged patina on the sterling, it's almost black, but shows no signs of use and there are remnants of sticker glue as old as the pin itself, making me think it has only been stored for these past 80 or so years.
It measure 1.75 inches top to bottom and is 1.5 inches in width and weighs 15 grams which is sturdy for a pin/pendant. The main stones used are turquoise from the Blue Gem mine and coral from the Mediterranean. Blue Gem turquoise was chosen for carving because it is naturally very hard and stones from this era were not yet stabilized. You can appreciate the beauty of Blue Gem turquoise in this piece as it's almost electric it's so vivid and rich. Extremely good stone with no damage, fissures, cracks or pitting.Coral is organic and more porous of course and its surface reflects that quality. A charming treatment by the Zuni artist was to add a couple of tiny minuscule drops of sterling filler to the coral stone's natural pitting on the sun's face....
A very rare detail that shows their focus on perfection and beauty and not to be confused as a repair. Mother of pearl and black jet finish out the stone arrangement with only 2 tiny drops of silver used as accents. The artist wanted their perfect workmanship on display with no silver accents necessary to cover any flaws. This item is in the category "Jewelry & Watches\Ethnic, Regional & Tribal\Brooches & Pins".
