NOTE : Please see all photos as they are part of the description. This sterling silver dragonfly brooch showcases the very collectible Pilot Mountain turquoise and hand-stamped silver. The stones used in this piece are of very high quality and the craftsmanship is exquisite. The stones are encircled with hand-braided wire which is also used for the dragonfly's antennas. This brooch also be worn as a pendant. 3-3/8" high X 3" wide. Fastening Type : Pin to attach or bale to hang on your chain. Herman Smith comes from a family of silversmiths.

At the age of 13 he learned the art of making jewelry from his mother Mary C. Herman's work is mostly traditional revival style, and he is known for his deep stamp work in the tradition of the old master silversmiths of the Navajo Nation. He always uses heavy gauge sterling silver that is carefully oxidized to create an older traditional look. The Pilot Mountain turquoise mine is located in western Nevada.

It began as a copper mine, but it was soon realized that the turquoise found there was of extremely high quality. Also known worldwide for its high grade color, Pilot Mountain turquoise is. Highly admired for its deep blue-green colors and can show light blue to dark green colors on the same stone. It is this unusual graduation in color that makes the turquoise very collectible.

A design in the silver is hand stamped using a handmade metal iron stamp. The silver is heated to soften the silver form. It is then stamped by hand evenly and with just the right pressure to make the design pronounced. It must not be stamped with too much pressure, or the metal will become brittle. Too light of stamping and the design would be weak.
